How it Works

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted hair on women and men of all skin types. It works by selectively destroying the individual hair follicles and bulbs that form the roots of the hair with an intense beam of light. The beam of light is comprised of a specific wavelength designed to target the pigment in the hair follicle and the bulb. When the beam finds the target, it heats up the tissue which destroys the hair follicle and the bulb, while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. Hair reduction ensues when the cells responsible for forming and growing hair are destroyed.

Women may use laser hair removal to eliminate unnatural hair growth, for example on the face, or simply to eliminate the need for future bikini waxes. Excessive hair growth caused by abnormal levels of male hormones (androgens) is fairly common among women, and laser hair removal is an effective remedy. Other symptoms of abnormal male hormone levels, such as abnormal periods and acne may or may not be present in affected women.

For men, the back and shoulders are the most common area of treatment, though they also often have hair on the chest, abdomen, ears and neck removed. Some men have treatments to thin out, rather than remove hair on their bodies.

Several different types of lasers are used for hair removal. At Ethos Spa, we have the 810 nm diode laser and the 1064 nm Nd:Yag laser. We utilize the diode laser for the lighter skin types from Fitzpatrick skin type I, II, III, IV which would include most Caucasians from different ethnic backgrounds. We use the 1064 Yag laser for darker skin types such as of some South Americans, Asians, and African Americans. Another laser which our clients may have used before and is popular is the alexandrite laser. Our diode laser is safer and just as effective

Lasers offer several advantages over other hair removal methods. First, shaving, tweezing, depilatories and waxing are all temporary. Laser hair removal offers a permanent method to remove unwanted hair. Alternative methods also have several potential side effects. Side effects of waxing include the potential for allergic reactions, burns, ingrown hairs and scarring. Waxing can also be quite painful. Depilatories can cause skin irritation and burns and must be performed weekly. Plucking and tweezing are impractical for large areas, can be painful and may lead to pigmentation problems and scarring, especially in patients with darker skin.

Unlike many other spas, Ethos Medical Spa is totally focused and dedicated to providing aesthetic procedures, performed by physicians who are specialists in cosmetic treatments. Using our selection of lasers, we create a treatment program specifically created for each individual client. Our warm and friendly atmosphere will make your visits a pleasure, and the results will thrill you for years to come.

Treatment protocol

The number of treatments depends on the several considerations including skin type, hair color, hair thickness and density, and hormonal factors. We typically recommend 4 to 6 treatments to get optimum results. Some people may see a significant reduction after one treatment while others may need more than 6 treatments. It is important to recognize that each individual hair undergoes different stages of growth. It is only possible to destroy the hair follicle and bulb while the individual hair is in its active growth phase. Each laser hair removal treatment aims to destroy the portion of the hair which is actively growing. That is why it takes several visits to realize a significant reduction in hair. However, with each treatment there is cumulative damage to the hair follicle and a progressive reduction in the number and diameter of hairs that are growing.

The time between visits varies, but depends primarily on location of the hair on the body. Hair on the face grows much more quickly than hair on the legs. We recommend treatment on the face every 4 weeks whereas the time between treatments for the legs can be 6 to 8 weeks. In general, we like to see that clients start experiencing significant hair growth in the treated area before the next visit.

The cost of treatments depends on the area for hair removal; larger areas typically require more time to perform the treatments and therefore cost more. Prices range from about $175 per treatment for the lip area to $850 per treatment per leg. Ethos spa offers laser hair removal package options that provide significant savings for clients who pay in full at the beginning of treatments

Skin Types

Laser hair removal is appropriate for all skin types and hair types. With the advent of the newer lasers, it is possible to safely and effectively treat all skin types including those of South Americans, Asians and African Americans. However, results may vary. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal has fair skin and coarse, dark hair. Lighter hair colors may require more treatments. Skin typing is based on reaction to sun, eye color, hair color, and ethnic background. Our physicians determine the skin type prior to beginning treatments. The skin type helps determine the settings to employ on the laser.
